from Lisa G

Went to the beach yesterday with two busloads of children from the orphanage.  The singing started when we pulled out, and continued until we returned.  The road to the beach was horrendous, dirt road with huge holes and puddles of water.  The children would scream, "sante!" which means jump, to make the bus bounce, I think….

Today I was able to visit the hospital.  They are the only hospital for 200 miles, the next nearest is in Managua.  This hospital is the only one that will treat the Moskito people.  Saw a woman who had been flown in by plane.  An organization called "Wings over Nicaragua".  I met and had a long conversation with the pilot, an American from Washington State who lives here full time with his wife and children.  The conditions at the hospital were very sobering.  I have a new appreciation for the cleanliness of the surgical setting where I work.  I treated a minor cut on the face of a child, observed a dressing change on a man with a recent arm amputation, and helped to calm a young girl in a great deal of pain following a gall bladder surgery.  I was frustrated that I can't speak Spanish, although a large population here doesn't speak Spanish, but Moskito.  The visit to the hospital was a surprise to me, sort of last minute.  I am sure this is another path that God intends me to take.  I hope to be able to take what I have learned and show others back home where the medical needs are and how they can help.

  1. Lisa,
I was hoping you would be able to visit the hospital. Seeing what the dear people of Nicaragua utilize when faced with health challenges is sobering. So thankful that you are there to help...even for a week!
